The release of Alpine Linux 3.20 is available, a minimalist distribution built on the Musl standard library and the BusyBox utility set. The distribution features enhanced security requirements and is assembled with Stack Smashing Protection (SSP). It uses OpenRC as the initialization system, and its own package manager apk for package management. Alpine is used to create official Docker container images and is also utilized in the PostmarketOS project. Bootable ISO images (x86_64, x86, armhf, aarch64, armv7, ppc64le, s390x) are prepared in six variants: standard (209 MB), network bootable (229 MB), extended (975 MB), for of virtual machines (61 MB) and for the Xen hypervisor (956 MB).
In the new release:
- Initial support for the 64-bit RISC-V architecture has been added. A minirootfs image has been created, sized at 3 MB.
- Packages with new versions of the graphical environments KDE 6, GNOME 46, and Sway 1.9 have been proposed.
- Updated package versions are available, including releases of LLVM 18, Node.js 20.10, Python 3.12, Ruby 3.3, Rust 1.78, Crystal 1.12, Go 1.22, .NET 8.0, grub 2.12, nginx 1.26, Nim 2.0, OpenJDK 22, R 4.4.
- Packages for the Redis database have been replaced with the Valkey fork, due to Redis switching to a proprietary license.
