Fedora 41 proposes to remove the network-scripts package, which provides support for traditional network configuration scripts that use the ifup and ifdown commands. Such scripts have been declared obsolete since 2018. The removal is justified by plans to discontinue ISC DHCP, which has not been maintained since the end of 2022.
The content of network-scripts is heavily tied to ISC DHCP, and transitioning to another DHCP client is not feasible due to the package's discontinuation. Instead of the ifup and ifdown commands, it is recommended to use the nmcli utility from NetworkManager or the networkctl command. The removal of network-scripts will not stop the functionality of legacy ifcfg network configurations, as alternative components for their support are provided by the NetworkManager-initscripts-ifcfg-rh package.
Additionally, it is worth noting the intention to introduce changes in Fedora 41 to the Polkit rules governing access to the rpm-ostree background process in Fedora distributions that use the atomic update model (Fedora Atomic Desktops). These changes will allow ordinary unprivileged users to carry out system updates without entering the administrator password.
At the same time, the changes will also expand the number of privileged operations that require the password to be entered when performed by an administrator. This change is seen as an additional measure to confirm the execution of risky operations by the administrator, such as changing kernel parameters, installing packages from the local file system, and switching system images. Operations to install/remove packages from standard repositories, system updates, and reverting changes will remain available to the administrator without requiring a password.
The proposals are still under discussion and have not yet been reviewed by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical aspect of developing the Fedora distribution.
