A stable release of the interface for simplifying network settings has been introduced — NetworkManager 1.48.0. Plugins for VPN support (Libreswan, OpenConnect, Openswan, SSTP, and others) are being developed within their own development cycles.
Key innovations in NetworkManager 1.48:
- The build system based on the autotools package has been deprecated. It is now recommended to use the meson build tool for compiling NetworkManager.
- The mac-address-blacklist property, which allowed for the definition of a blacklist of MAC addresses for wired and wireless networks, has been deprecated. Instead of mac-address-blacklist, the mac-address-denylist property should be used, which does not include politically incorrect terminology.
- The 802-1x.openssl-ciphers property has been added to change the OpenSSL ciphers used during 802.1X authentication. This allows, for example, disabling certain new ciphers when connecting to old servers.
- The use of IPv6 SLAAC (Stateless Address Auto-configuration) and the assignment of an IPv6 DNS server address for broadband modems is permitted if the IPv6 address was not explicitly provided by ModemManager.
- Support for sending a DHCP RELEASE message in the event of a connection drop has been added.
- A problem that caused 100% CPU load when receiving a large number of route updates from external programs has been resolved.
- A problem with the wireless devices' support for the 6 GHz band has been resolved.
