The release of Rocky Linux 8.10 has been announced, aimed at creating a free build of RHEL that can take the place of classic CentOS, after Red Hat prematurely ended support for the CentOS 8 branch at the end of 2021, instead of in 2029 as originally planned. Rocky Linux builds are prepared for the x86_64 and aarch64 architectures. Additionally, builds for cloud environments such as Oracle Cloud Platform (OCP), GenericCloud, Amazon AWS (EC2), Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure are created, as well as images for containers and virtual machines in RootFS/OCI and Vagrant (Libvirt, VirtualBox, VMWare) formats.
As with classic CentOS, the changes made to the Rocky Linux packages focus on removing ties to the Red Hat brand. The distribution is binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.10 where possible and includes all the enhancements proposed in this release. For example, new versions of GCC Toolset 13, LLVM Toolset 17.0.6, Rust Toolset 1.75.0, Go Toolset 1.21.0, Python 3.12, Ruby 3.3, PHP 8.2, Git 2.43.0, nginx 1.24, samba 4.19.4, PostgreSQL 16, MariaDB 10.11, and Podman 4.9 are offered. It has been indicated that the Rocky Linux 8.10 release will be the last standalone release in the 8.x branch and version 8.11 will not be created (package updates addressing vulnerabilities and critical bugs will continue for another five years without separate distribution releases).
Among the specific changes for Rocky Linux are the inclusion of additional repositories: plus c with the open-vm-tools package, nfv with packages for virtualizing network components developed by the NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) SIG group, RT with packages for real-time operation, PowerTools, ResilientStorage, and HighAvailability. In the AWS images, the ability to boot in subnets only with IPv6 is provided.
Additionally, it should be noted that the end of life for the CentOS 7 branch is approaching. After June 30, 2024, updates addressing vulnerabilities for CentOS 7 will no longer be released. CentOS 7 users are advised to upgrade their systems to CentOS Stream 8, AlmaLinux 8, Rocky Linux 8, Oracle Linux 8, or EuroLinux 8 by the end of June.
