Valve has released a new version of the Proton 9.0-2 project, based on the Wine codebase and aimed at enabling the launch of Windows games on Linux, presented in the Steam catalog. The developments of the project are distributed under the BSD license.
Proton allows for the direct launch of gaming applications in the Linux Steam client that are only supplied for Windows. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), operating through the translation of DirectX calls into the Vulkan API, provides improved game controller support, and enables fullscreen mode regardless of the resolutions supported by the games. To enhance the performance of multithreaded games, support for mechanisms such as 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex/fsync' is implemented.
Changes in the new version of Proton include:
- Support for OpenXR 1.1.36 (Khronos standard) and OpenVR 2.2.3 (Valve's API) for use with virtual reality headsets has been added.
- Compatibility with the OpenComposite package has been improved, allowing for the launch of SteamVR-created games without SteamVR, using an OpenVR implementation that translates calls to OpenXR.
- Synchronized with the Wine 9.1 release.
- The DXVK layer, which translates calls to the Vulkan API, has been updated to version 2.3.1.
- VKD3D-Proton, a fork of vkd3d created by Valve to enhance Direct3D 12 support in Proton, has been updated to version 2.12.1.
- The Dxvk-nvapi package, implementing the NVAPI library over DXVK, has been updated to version 0.7.0.
- The Wine Mono engine with the implementation of the .NET platform has been updated to version 9.1.0.
