The release of the specialized distribution Tails 6.4 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System), based on the Debian 12 package base, equipped with the GNOME 43 desktop and designed for anonymous internet access, has been completed. Anonymous access in Tails is provided by the Tor network. By default, all connections except traffic through the Tor network are blocked by a packet filter. For storing user data in persistent mode between reboots, encryption is employed. An ISO image capable of running in Live mode, sized at 1 GB, has been prepared for download.
In the new version, saving a random seed value on a USB drive (in free sectors outside of Tails' persistent storage) has been implemented. This seed is used to initialize the entropy pool for the random number generator during the early boot phase, where available entropy sources may be insufficient for generating quality random numbers for cryptographic needs or when eliminating delays in accumulating entropy is necessary (the random number saved before shutdown helps make up for the lack of entropy during the next boot).
The new version also transitions to using an HTTPS address instead of the onion address for accessing Debian and Tails APT repositories, which has improved the reliability of automatically installing user-chosen additional software at Tails startup. Issues with unlocking the storage space designated for user data persistence have been resolved. The built-in PDF reader in Thunderbird has been restored, which was disabled in the previous release. Versions of Tor Browser 13.0.16, Tor 0.4.8.12, and Thunderbird 115.12.0 have been updated.
