Mozilla has announced experiments to integrate a chatbot into Firefox that uses large language models for user interaction in natural language. Testing of the chatbot will begin this week in Nightly builds of Firefox.
The chatbot will be embedded in the sidebar and can operate via ChatGPT, Google Gemini, HuggingChat, and Le Chat Mistral services at the user's choice. In the future, the range of supported AI services is planned to be expanded. Users will have the ability to submit text queries to the AI bot in chat form, as well as send selected text from the viewed page for a summary of the content or to explain the essence in simpler terms.
To enable the chatbot, the user needs to activate the experiment 'AI Chatbot Integration' in the settings under the 'Nightly Experiments' section. Sending selected text to the bot is done through a new element 'Ask chatbot' in the context menu that appears when right-clicking on the highlighted area. Users can pin the chatbot to the sidebar using the content configuration interface.
If desired, users can add their own service instead of the predefined AI services, including one that runs on the local system and utilizes open large language models, using the llamafile toolkit that allows creating universal executables for machine learning models. Instructions for integrating personal models will be published later.
