The Linux kernel developer community has sadly lost one of its long-time and productive wireless driver developers. Larry Finger, who contributed to the Linux kernel since 2005, has made over 1500 corrections.
His wife reported Larry's death on the linux-wireless mailing list:
"I want to inform you that Larry Finger, one of your developers, passed away on June 21."
Larry Finger initially worked on the Broadcom BCM43XX driver and over the years made significant contributions to Wi-Fi driver development for Linux. Recently, his contributions were focused on RTW88, RTW89, R8188EU, R8712, RTLWIFI, B43, and other networking drivers for Linux.
Thanks in part to him, Linux support for wireless hardware has significantly advanced over the past two decades… Long-time Linux users surely remember the days when they struggled with Wi-Fi support, resorting to NDISWrapper to use Windows WiFi drivers in Linux and other headaches compared to today’s mostly trouble-free support for wireless hardware.
