The developers of the Hurd project have announced the ability to build 71% of Debian archive packages in the Debian GNU/Hurd distribution. Last year, this figure was 58%. Among other achievements, GNU/Hurd has seen the porting of the Mach kernel for the AArch64 architecture and the acceptance of patches that allow the use of GCC to build GNU/Hurd programs for AArch64. Currently, the port does not yet provide all desired functionality but can already be used to run simple applications. Experimental support for symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) has been implemented in the GNU Mach kernel. Issues with building using GCC 14 have been resolved. Support for the rustc compiler has been added, enabling the building of applications for GNU/Hurd written in Rust.
The Debian GNU/Hurd distribution combines the Debian software environment with the GNU/Hurd kernel and remains the only actively developed Debian platform based on a non-Linux kernel (the Debian GNU/KFreeBSD port was previously developed but has long been abandoned).
