The Khronos Consortium, which develops graphics standards, has recognized the full compatibility of the open Panthor driver with the OpenGL ES 3.1 specification. The driver successfully passed all tests from the CTS (Khronos Conformance Test Suite) and is included in the list of certified drivers. Certification has been achieved for the Mali G610 GPU. The verification was performed on the Rock5b board (SoC RK3588) in a Wayland-based environment, with Linux kernel 6.10.0-rc1 and Mesa 24.1.1. Obtaining the certificate allows for official claims of compatibility with graphics standards and the use of associated Khronos trademarks.
The Panthor driver, which is included in today's release of the Linux kernel 6.10, supports the tenth generation of Mali GPUs (G310, G510, G710). Support for the new Mali GPUs on the Mesa side has been offered in Mesa 24.1. In the tenth generation of Mali GPUs, the Job Manager scheduling has been replaced with a CSF (Command Stream Frontend) interface, which instead of a job chain sending model utilizes a command stream-based model with command queue scheduling on the firmware side. To organize the scheduler's operation, a separate Cortex-M7 microcontroller is embedded in the GPU, and a dedicated Command Execution Unit is available for executing CSF instructions.
Future plans for the development of the Panfrost and Panthor drivers for Mali GPUs include support for performance counters, simplifying optimization of graphics-related code, expanding debugging capabilities for firmware and graphic drivers, support for the Arm AFRC compression format for framebuffers, improved memory management, optimization for systems with limited RAM, overall performance optimization, and implementation of support for the Vulkan graphics API.
