Audacity, a free and cross-platform audio editor, has been updated to version 3.6.
Key innovations:
- Master effects: These effects are applied to the entire project at once, simplifying sound processing.
- New compressor and limiter effects: These effects now show a history of gain reduction when used in real time.
- New and improved themes: New dark and light themes have been added. Users can switch between themes through the "Preferences -> Interface" menu. The old theme is available as "Classic", and even older themes can be installed as custom.
Support for FFmpeg 7
Audacity 3.6 adds support for the latest version of the FFmpeg 7 multimedia framework, expanding its capabilities for working with various audio and video formats.
New features and improvements:
- Inserting audio files in Audacity is now available using Ctrl+V.
- Export selected audio: A new "Export Selected Audio" option in the "Extras → Export" menu.
- Support for large offsets: Support for offsets larger than 2 GB.
- Option to show/hide RMS in waveforms added to the "View" menu.
Additional improvements:
- The updated "What’s New" dialog has been redesigned for better readability.
- Support for loading AI effects with OpenVINO: Effects can be uploaded from audacityteam.org.
- Customizable waveform colors: Support for alternative waveform colors through custom themes.
- New option in Scripting: "GetInfo: Type=Selection".
Bug fixes:
- Fixed a bug where the project could open with the wrong sample rate.
- Fixed issues with the display of orange lines when using the High Contrast theme.
- Fixed a bug affecting the quality slider when exporting to Ogg on Linux.
- Fixed an issue in the macro manager where actions without parameters were not shown as editable.
- Fixed a bug where the new track did not scroll back during recording.
Audacity 3.6 is available for download on the official website as an AppImage binary that can run on any modern GNU/Linux system with x86-64 architecture without installation. Detailed release notes contain more information about the changes made.
