The non-profit organization Apache Software Foundation, which provides a neutral and independent platform for the development of around 400 open-source products, announced its decision to completely change its logo by removing the image of a feather, which has been a symbol of Apache projects since 1997. The new logo, to be selected through a vote among the organization's members, is set to be presented on October 7 at the Community Over Code conference.
The reason for discontinuing the previous symbolism is attributed to the discontent expressed by Natives in Tech, an organization advocating for the interests of indigenous people. Specifically, the organization finds the use of Native American symbolism in Apache Software Foundation's logo unacceptable and views it as a manipulation of the cultural values of national minorities, distorting the representation of Native Americans and based on stereotypes. In addition to the logo change, advocates for indigenous rights have also demanded the organization rename itself and cease the use of the word Apache. However, the community has so far limited itself to renaming the ApacheCon conference to Community Over Code, deciding against renaming the organization due to high costs and legal complexities.
