SpaceX is preparing to offer a new service to commercial clients based on its Starlink satellite network, providing ultra-fast internet speeds of up to 8 Gbps even in remote areas without ground infrastructure.
Recently, SpaceX's Vice President of Starlink Design, Michael Nicolls, posted speed test results from Jacksonville, Florida, showing that Starlink can achieve data transmission speeds of up to 8102 Mbps using mobile gateway technology.
According to PCMag reports that this new service appears to be an extension of SpaceX's business initiative to create 'community base stations,' which were announced back in January. Currently, the company offers users a Starlink satellite dish providing speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 300 Mbps. However, for commercial clients such as internet providers, SpaceX will begin building base stations using mobile gateway technology, equipped with large antennas capable of providing broadband internet to remote areas lacking fiber-optic networks.
The first such station has already been built in Unalaska, a city on an island near Alaska, which is now successfully providing local residents with fast internet through a local provider. The Unalaska station is land-based; however, SpaceX also plans to implement mobile gateway technology on military ships and aircraft.
For the creation of such stations, SpaceX will charge companies a fee of $1.25 million, with a monthly payment starting at $75,000 depending on the amount of traffic used.
