The OpenMandriva project has released OpenMandriva ROME 24.07, an edition of the OpenMandriva distribution that uses a rolling release model for continuous updates. The proposed edition allows access to new package versions being developed for the OpenMandriva Lx 6 branch without waiting for the creation of a traditional distribution. ISO images sized 2.1-3.4 GB are available for download with desktop environments KDE, GNOME, and LXQt, supporting Live mode booting. KDE and LXQt builds are offered in x86_64 and 'znver1' variants (optimized for AMD Ryzen, ThreadRipper, and EPYC processors). KDE builds are available with Plasma 6 X11, Plasma 6 Wayland, and Plasma 5. Builds for ARM64 architecture boards are expected to be released soon.
Release Features:
- By default, the KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment is activated, based on releases of KDE Plasma 6.1.3, KDE Frameworks 6.4.0, KDE Gears 24.05.2, and Qt 6.7.2. Optionally, packages and builds with KDE Plasma 5.27.11, KDE Frameworks 5.116, KDE Gears 23.08.5, and Qt 5.15.14 are available. The graphical stack continues to use the X11 base by default, but an ISO image with KDE Plasma 6 based on Wayland has been separately prepared (Wayland support in KDE is noted as not mature enough to replace X11 for most users).
- User environments LXQt 2.0.0 and GNOME 46.3 have been updated.
- Components of the graphical stack have been updated to versions Xorg Server 21.1.13, Wayland 1.23.0, and Mesa 24.1.4.
- System components have been updated: Linux kernel 6.10.0 (built with Clang instead of GCC), systemd 255.7, LLVM/clang 18.1.8, binutils 2.42, gcc 14.1.0, glibc 2.39, Java 22. The installer has been updated to Calamares 3.3.8.
- User applications have been updated: LibreOffice 24.2.5 (with components for integration with Qt 6 and KDE Plasma 6), Falkon 24.05.2, Firefox 128.0, Chromium 126.0.6478.182, QMPlay2 24.06.16, Telegram Desktop 5.1.7, Krita 5.2.3, GIMP 2.10.38, Digikam 8.4.0, SMPlayer 24.5.0, VLC 3.0.21, Virtualbox 7.0.18, VokoscreenNG 4.2.0, and OBS Studio 30.2.0.
- In addition to the wine package, the packages proton and proton-experimental are included, aimed at running game applications created for Windows and available on the Steam catalog.
- The new combined login greeting and system settings interface OM-Welcome integrates modules from the old oma-welcome and om-control-center applications, allowing OM-Welcome to serve as a starting point for system configuration and installation of popular additional software.
- Changes have been included in the Firefox and Chromium packages that disable telemetry transmission. servers Mozilla and Google. Changes from the ungoogled project and patches to add JPEG-XL format support have been implemented in Chromium.
- Support for the AMD ROCm stack has been added for systems with AMD graphics cards, enabling GPU computation offloading.
- An AI-generated graphics plugin has been added to the Krita graphic editor.
- A declarative RPM package building feature has been proposed, implemented for standard build systems including cmake, meson, autotools, and Python setuptools/pip. This new feature simplifies build and installation instructions for many packages to the simplest parameters, such as 'BuildSystem: cmake'.
- Porting of OpenMandriva for the RISC-V architecture is underway, with builds expected to be published in the next release.
