OpenAI has announced an update to its ChatGPT service. Now, users on the free plan can create up to two images per day using the DALL-E 3 model. This change is part of the company's strategy to expand the functionality of its products.
The DALL-E 3 version, launched in September 2022, was initially available only to subscribers of the paid ChatGPT Plus plan. Now, the service has become accessible to a wider audience, albeit with some limitations. In addition to expanding access to the service, it has also gained new features. Previously, users needed to formulate their own prompts to create images, but now ChatGPT can assist with this. Users only need to ask it to write a thematic prompt. For instance, Aditya Ramesh, the lead researcher and head of the DALL-E team, asked ChatGPT to help him come up with a logo for a cafe located near the mountains. Based on this short request, ChatGPT generated a longer and more detailed prompt, and DALL-E offered four image options.
OpenAI has stated that the feature for free image generation with DALL-E 3 is being rolled out. Some users have already gained access to this capability. Specifically, a journalist from was able to create two images in the ChatGPT app for Mac before receiving a notification about reaching the daily image creation limit.
OpenAI has also made several other important announcements. The company presented a safety assessment of its GPT-4o model, added a new member to its board of directors, and CEO Sam Altman received a letter from Democrats in the U.S. Congress requesting clarification on OpenAI's safety issues.
