The Gentoo Linux project has decided to discontinue support for the IA-64 (Itanium) architecture in the distribution. In the first half of September, all ia64 profiles will be removed and mentions of the ia64 architecture in the KEYWORDS section will cease across all packages. The reason for this change is the inability to continue supporting IA-64 in the distribution given the discontinuation of support for this architecture in the Linux kernel and Glibc, as well as the small number of users interested in maintaining this type of hardware.
Itanium processors were introduced by Intel in 2001, but the ia64 architecture could not compete with AMD64, primarily due to AMD64's superior performance and smoother transition from 32-bit x86 processors. As a result, Intel shifted its focus towards x86-64 processors, leaving Itanium behind. servers HP Integrity, which stopped accepting orders in 2021.
