CockroachDB has announced a change in its licensing policy, discontinuing the Core version of its database and significantly limiting free options. These changes will take effect starting with release 24.3, scheduled for November. The CockroachDB code will continue to be available but under a restricted-use license (the "source-available" model). Until now, the company offered two database variants: the free CockroachDB Core, providing basic functionality, and the paid CockroachDB Enterprise, which includes advanced features and optimizations related to fault tolerance, scalability, and information protection.
The supply of the free CockroachDB Core variant is now discontinued, and in its place, two new Enterprise editions are offered for deploying CockroachDB on your own servers which contain all the extended features but have usage limitations: the CockroachDB Enterprise Trial, which can only be used for 30 days, and the CockroachDB Enterprise Free version, which has no time constraints, but can only be used by individual developers, students, and companies with revenues of less than $10 million per year.
This is CockroachDB's second step away from the open development model. Initially, this database was distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, but in 2019 it was moved to the Business Source License (BSL), which is not free due to discrimination against certain categories of users. The essence of the BSL is that the code for extended functionality can be used for free for a limited time only under additional conditions, and to bypass these conditions, a commercial license must be purchased. In the case of CockroachDB, the additional condition involves a prohibition on selling commercial versions of CockroachDB in the form of cloud services.
