bfs 4.0 and 4.0.1

bfs 4.0 and 4.0.1

On August 16 and 19, versions 4.0 and 4.0.1 of the multithreaded console file search utility were released. bfs (Breadth-First Search, BFS), written in C and distributed under the BSD license.

Changes:

  • to comply with BSD find (and POSIX Utility Syntax Guidelines), multiple options can now be specified in a single argument, e.g., -LEXO2;
  • explicit timestamps can now be written as @seconds_since_epoch. For example, $ bfs -newermt @946684800 will output files modified since January 1, 2000 (UTC);
  • the new -noerror option suppresses all error messages during the search;
  • -mount now completely excludes mount points to comply with the recently published POSIX 2024 standard. Use -xdev to include the mount point itself, but not its contents. In bfs, a warning about this change was issued starting from version 1.5.1 (September 2019);
  • -perm now takes into account umask when parsing mode symbols (like +rw), as clarified in defect POSIX 1392. This matches the behavior of BSD find, unlike that of GNU find;
  • a number of bugs have been fixed.
