After two and a half years since the last major release, the full-screen console window manager (terminal multiplexer) GNU Screen 5.0.0 has been released, allowing you to organize a multi-window interface in the console using a single physical terminal to work with multiple applications, each allocated separate virtual terminals that remain active between different user sessions.
Among the changes:
- The authentication mechanism has been rewritten. A new command 'auth' has been introduced to enable authentication and use a password to protect access to the session, replacing the old 'password' command.
- A 'multiinput' command has been added to allow simultaneous input in multiple windows.
- A 'status' command has been added to customize the placement of the status window. The command can accept values top, up, down, bottom, left, and right. By default, the values 'bottom left' are set for positioning status messages in the lower-left corner.
- A 'truecolor' command has been added to enable the use of an extended color range in supporting terminals.
- Escape sequences '%T' and '%O' have been added to show the current tty for the window and to display the number of open windows.
- The wcwidth() function has been used to determine the size of unicode characters instead of built-in size tables for UTF-8.
- The commands time, debug, password, maxwin, and nethack have been removed.
