Release of Cage 0.2, a composite server based on Wayland for creating kiosks

The release of the Cage 0.2 composite server is now available, utilizing Wayland and designed for the isolated launch of individual applications in kiosk mode. Notable use cases for Cage include creating home automation systems, demonstration stands, electronic billboards, and self-service terminals. The project code is written in C and is distributed under the MIT license.

The interface in Cage is limited to a single application; the user cannot exit this application and access the operating system. The screen is bound to a single output device, and all auxiliary dialogs are displayed in the center of the screen without the ability to move or resize. Data can be placed and extracted through the clipboard. Applications are directly linked to the launched graphical environment; for example, to create a kiosk with the Epiphany browser, simply execute "cage /usr/bin/epiphany," and upon exiting the program, the composite server server also terminates its operation.

Among the most notable changes in the new release:

  • An optional ability to launch X applications through Xwayland has been added.
  • Support for the primary selection buffer has been introduced, in which text is placed immediately after selection and is available for pasting with the middle mouse button.
  • Support for the Wayland protocol relative-pointer-unstable-v1 has been added, allowing events with information about the relative movement of the pointer to be used.
  • All improvements proposed in the wlroots library releases 0.17 and 0.18 have been implemented.
