A major update of the terminal multiplexer tmux was published a week ago under version 3.5, the main change of which was an improved implementation of extended keys (extended keys). On October 5, the developers presented the bugfix release 3.5a.
Tmux — a free program that allows you to manage multiple console sessions from a single virtual terminal. It enables you to split the screen space of the terminal emulator vertically or horizontally into panes, each of which runs a separate command-line shell session, and group these panes into windows. Management of windows and panes is done through key combinations, with optional mouse support. Additionally, Tmux implements scrolling within the console output and has a built-in clipboard. Tmux's capabilities can be extended through the installation of plugins.
The program is released under the ISC License and is distributed under GitHub. Tmux is included in the minimal installation OpenBSD, and installation is possible on many Unix-like systems.
Changes in Tmux 3.5
- To ensure full compatibility with xterm in mode 2 and mode 1, support for extended keys has been revised. Tmux will now always request mode 2 from the parent terminal. This allows for a consistent internal representation of keys. An extended-keys-format option has been added to control the presentation format of keys, similar to the formatOtherKeys resource in xterm.
- The overlay (popup window or menu) will be cleared when the command line is opened.
- A copy-mode -d flag has been added to scroll down one page while already in copy mode (matching -e).
- Hyperlinks will be displayed in copy mode. A copy_cursor_hyperlink format has been added to obtain the hyperlink target under the cursor.
- An option for the prefix timeout (the key combination that starts the input of tmux commands) has been added.
- Key combinations with mouse movement have been disabled. They will be ignored to prevent exiting the prefix.
- Formats search_count and search_count_partial have been added to copy mode.
- Mouse focus will not move when clicking on the status line.
- Mirrored versions of the main-horizontal and main-vertical layouts have been added, where the main pane is at the bottom or on the right, rather than at the top or on the left.
- The work of REP with Unicode characters has been enabled.
- Corrected the calculation of the end of escape sequences in the clipboard.
- CRLF will be handled as LF in configuration files wherever possible.
- Workarounds for Linux console bugs manifesting with bright colors have been added.
- Environment variables used by systemd are removed during builds.
- The logic for deleting the last buffer has been adjusted to better preserve the selection area: if an element below a deleted one cannot be selected (e.g., the selection included the end of the output), the element above will be selected.
- The option —enable-jemalloc has been added for building with the jemalloc memory allocator, due to the limitations of glibc malloc.
- A way for clients to obtain OSC 10 and 11 requests has been added (refresh-client -r), allowing them to set foreground and background colors.
- Backward search with the N key has been added in tree mode.
- default-shell will be used for the command line, #() and popups (see release notes for 3.5a).
- Parts of the changes that were intended to skip already viewed lines during searches to improve performance have been reverted, as they were skipping end-of-line characters entirely.
- A command-error hook for commands that terminate with an error has been added.
- The option allow-set-title has been added, preventing applications from changing the panel title.
- Mouse behavior on cursor lift has been fixed: only the last dropped button is ignored, and double-clicks are always processed.
- A crash when moving focus to a closing pane has been fixed.
- During the next session search when detach-on-destroy is executed, the last created session will be selected.
- The default exit time has been reduced to 10 milliseconds.
- A command display-menu -M has been added, which allows always enabling mouse support in the menu.
- Device attributes will search for feature code 21 for DECSLRM and 28 for DECFRA. Level 1 has been enabled.
- A crash has been fixed if the program is built with SIXEL support and the SIXEL color register is incorrect. SIXEL images will be removed before reformatting.
- The window-layout-changed notification is not sent if the window is about to be closed soon.
- When the selected area is empty, the selection will be considered absent in terms of the selection_active and selection_present format variables.
- Fixed behavior of split-window -p.
Changes in Tmux 3.5a
- The color name grey has been restored.
- Restored use of /bin/sh for #(), run-shell, and if-shell. Pop-ups will continue to use default-shell.
- Fixed combinations involving Shift and C-BSpace keys when using extended keys.
When updating, note that 3.5 changes key representation, meaning keys that were previously considered equivalent will now behave differently., for example:
- C-A and C-a, C-B and C-b, etc.;
- C-i and Tab;
- C-m and Enter;
- C-@ and C-Space;
- C-Enter and Enter;
- C-BTab and C-S-Tab.
All bindings using these keys will need to be changed in .tmux.conf when updating to 3.5a.
