Twenty years ago, on October 20, 2004, the first version of the Ubuntu 4.10 distribution, "Warty Warthog," was released. The project was founded by Mark Shuttleworth, a millionaire from South Africa who was involved in the development of Debian and inspired by the idea of creating a user-friendly desktop distribution with a predictable, fixed development cycle. Several developers from the Debian project were recruited, some of whom are still contributing to both projects. The release of Ubuntu 4.10 included GNOME 2.8, Firefox 0.9, and OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 and remains available for download, allowing users to experience how the system looked 20 years ago.
