The Rust Foundation has announced the start of a public discussion on a new draft of trademark usage rules related to the Rust programming language and the Cargo package manager. This new version incorporates feedback and criticism expressed last year during the first attempt to adopt the Rust trademark rules. It is claimed that the rules, which are intended to be approved by the end of the year, primarily aim to protect the interests of the community and the integrity of the Rust programming language, as well as to curb abuses and attempts to misrepresent third-party developments as part of the main project.
Comments and suggestions on the new rules will be accepted until November 20. Among the most significant changes compared to the first draft are:
- The ban on using the words "rust" and "cargo" in package names has been removed. The prefixes "rust-" and "cargo-" are no longer considered reserved by the Rust project.
- The Rust trademark does not limit the use of the word "Rust" in a general sense but only covers areas related to products or services associated with the Rust language.
- Changes to the project's logo color are now permitted.
- Community representatives are allowed to use the Rust project trademarks on goods produced in limited quantities.
- The organization does not intend to spend resources on independently identifying violations of the rules by small manufacturers; instead, it plans to rely on complaints from community representatives.
- The general explanatory text addressed to non-lawyers at the beginning of the document has been replaced with term explanations located within the document itself.
- The non-endorsement rule, which prohibits creating a false impression that a third-party project is affiliated with the Rust Foundation or the Rust project, is evaluated using subjective criteria.
