After six months of development, the UBports project, which took over the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile platform after Canonical stepped away, has released the OTA-6 Focal (over-the-air) firmware. This is the sixth release of Ubuntu Touch, based on the package base of Ubuntu 20.04. The project is also developing an experimental port of the Unity 8 desktop, renamed Lomiri.
The update for Ubuntu Touch OTA-6 Focal will soon be available for devices including Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, F(x)tec Pro1 X, Fairphone 3/3+/4, Google Pixel 3a/3a XL, JingPad A1, Oneplus 5/5T/6/6T, OnePlus Nord N10 5G/N100, Sony Xperia X, Vollaphone X/22/X23, and Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC/X3.
It is noted that the main focus during the development of this new release was on preparing for the transition to a newer LTS branch of Ubuntu. Changes in Ubuntu Touch OTA-6 Focal include:
- Builds have started for the OnePlus Nord N10 5G and OnePlus Nord N100 smartphones.
- The system has been adapted to the new versions of Android HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer), which will enable support for new devices such as the Fairphone 5 and Volla Phone Quintus.
- The stability of working with wireless displays has been enhanced.
- The ofono-binder-plugin and ofono-binder-plugin-ext-mtk packages have been ported to the builds based on Android 9.
- Accumulated bugs have been fixed.
- Support for VoLTE for Volla Phone X23 and Volla Phone 22 smartphones has been implemented but postponed until the next release.
