Developers of the Debian Junior project, which focuses on enhancing the usability for children with the Debian GNU/Linux distribution, have announced the creation of Live builds (3 GB) that include a child-optimized user environment and a selection of programs useful and interesting for children up to 12 years old. The proposed Live build is planned to be updated weekly. Initially, Debian Junior was aimed at improving the standard Debian and maintaining a package set for children.
The user environment is based on the IceWM window manager, allowing it to run even on outdated computers with limited RAM. The Thunar file manager from the Xfce project is included, Epiphany (GNOME Web) is offered for web navigation, Dino-IM for messaging, Evolution for email, LibreOffice for document writing, VLC for multimedia playback, Evince for document viewing, and Eye of GNOME for image viewing. It also includes educational applications such as GCompris (lessons for preschool and early school-aged children), Stellarium (planetarium), kturtle (programming education), and pySioGame (educational games).
