Nastene (also known as ii) is a distributed messaging system, a simplified version of Fido. The operation involves two objects. The message object is simply a message. The echo object is a named list of messages. Stations download lists from other stations based on a predefined routing, then retrieve the messages they do not have. Points write messages at the station (either via the web interface or a client). That's all, this encompasses all exchanges and the entire network structure.
Nastene 0.7 is the station. It is written in Python 3 and operates on text files.
About routing. With list.txt and Python scripts, it is easy to ensure a mode where "everyone exchanges with everyone," but as practice shows, different stations have different echo lists. This was by design. Usually, there is an archive station in the network that downloads all messages from all stations.
There is a lite interface (supports, for example, win95/ie4+), an echo has been created. retro.talks.
The initial goal of the project was to foster small, friendly communities (when traffic is low, the echo format allows for more engagement in discussions). Or a distributed mini-Twitter. The project is over 10 years old, but many messages from long-gone websites remain preserved. What is written in ii cannot be erased. Thanks to this, echoes retro.talks have been recreated from two long-defunct websites and echoes.
Changes (essentially, these are changes from the 2014 version):
- Instead of Foundation (which had a bunch of CSS and JS files), chota CSS (a single CSS file) is used. Light and dark themes have been introduced. The icon font has been removed. For those who find even this too heavy, there is a lite interface.
- Introduction of the topicid tag to track chains (even if some messages are missing).
This still is a basic implementation of the protocol; the next version may be released in another 10 years.
