The testing release of the Xfce 4.20 desktop environment has been published, aimed at providing a classic desktop environment that requires minimal system resources. The release is expected on December 29, if a decision is made to publish another testing release, Xfce 4.20 Pre3, or on December 15, if the developers consider the codebase stable enough.
The Xfce 4.20 branch is notable for adding experimental support for working with the Wayland protocol. A new library, libxfce4windowing, is employed to abstract operations over Wayland and X11, providing a graphics system-independent layer where window management components (screens, root windows, virtual desktops, etc.) are implemented. Instead of libmutter, the wlroots library, developed by the Sway project, is used in the Wayland-based session.
At the same time, the winners of the contest for new desktop wallpapers have been announced, whose works will be included in the Xfce 4.20 release. The contest featured 18 participants who submitted 54 entries. As a result of the voting among community members, the following winners were chosen:
