The Window Maker Live 12.8 distribution has been released, featuring a user environment based on the Window Maker 0.96 window manager with a NEXTSTEP-style interface. It includes GNUstep components, which are placed in a separate GNUstep Apps submenu. Some applications have been rebuilt using GNUstep libraries, such as the text editor Emacs 29.4. For email management, the GNUstep-based email client GNUmail is provided, with Claws Mail available as an alternative. For web browsing, the browsers Pale Moon, Otter, and WebSurf are included. Builds are prepared for x86_64 and i386 architectures (3 GB).
In the new version:
- The system environment is synchronized with Debian 12.8.
- The package versions provided in Debian 12 with GNUstep have been replaced with new versions from Debian Testing.
- Improved integration of GNUstep applications with the desktop.
- The x86_64 builds utilize the Linux kernel 6.11.5, and for i386 — 6.10.11.
- Added applications for book digitization and eBook creation (scantailor-advanced, ocrmypdf, tesseract-ocr, and Sigil), as well as some TeX Live components and additional utilities, such as AUCTeX extensions for Emacs and vim-latexsuite for Vim.
- The Surf browser has been replaced with Otter. Additionally, the browser WebSurf.app has been added with a version of Netsurf, adapted to GNUstep libraries.
- In addition to the QEMU emulator, the package includes the emulators 86Box (for old x86 systems) and Previous (for the NeXT platform, allowing old NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP systems, built for the m68k architecture, to run).
- The custom build of GTK3 libraries (gtk3-classic) has been replaced with the standard GTK3 libraries from the Debian repository.
- Components specific to Window Maker Live are now placed in a separate repository 'wmlive.rumbero.org/repo' and can now be installed in standard Debian 12 environments.
