The Linux Foundation has published its annual report. Over the year, the organization earned $292.2 million (up from $263.6 million last year) and spent $299.7 million (compared to $269 million last year). The costs for Linux kernel development amounted to $6.8 million, which is one million dollars less than the previous year and $1.4 million less than two years ago. The overall share of expenses related to kernel development among all expenses decreased to 2.3%. In comparison, the share of kernel expenses was 2.9% in 2023, 3.2% in 2022, and 3.4% in 2021.
Other expenses:
- Infrastructure maintenance costs remained almost unchanged at $22.69 million (7.6%, last year $22.58 million);
- Expenses for non-kernel projects increased from $171.8 million to $193.7 million (64.6%);
- Expenditures for training and certification programs rose from $18.57 million to $23.1 million (7.7%);
- Corporate operation costs grew from $17.1 million to $18.9 million (6.3%);
- Event expenses rose from $14.6 million to $15.2 million (5%);
- Community support expenses remained nearly the same at $13.7 million (4.5%, last year $13.5 million);
- International operation costs grew from $2.96 million to $5.6 million (1.8%).
Income:
- 43% ($125.1 million, last year $118.2 million) of all funds received came from donations and membership fees of the organization;
- 25.1% ($73.6 million, last year $67 million) – targeted support for projects;
- 18.6% ($54.5 million, last year $49.5 million) – support for events, as well as registration fees for conferences;
- 12.3% ($36.1 million, last year $27.2 million) – payment for training courses and certification.
The number of projects curated by the Linux Foundation has approached 1300 (compared to around 1100 last year). The largest number of Linux Foundation projects is related to cloud technologies, containers, and virtualization (23%), networking technologies (15%), artificial intelligence (11%), web development (11%), cross-technology (9%), security (5%), the Internet of Things (4%), and blockchain (4%).
