After a four-year hiatus, the IOCCC (International Obfuscated C Code Contest) is back, aimed at writing the most convoluted and difficult-to-understand code in C. The IOCCC28 event will be the fortieth in the competition's history, which has been held since 1984. Submissions will be accepted from January 31 to April 2, 2025. Unlike previous contests, UTF-8 encoding is now permitted in the source code.
Submissions to the contest must thwart code analysis and understanding of the problem being solved, yet the code should be interesting and noteworthy (entries may have unusual presentations or highlight unexpected aspects of the C language). The size of the source code must not exceed 4096 bytes, and the program must compile and perform a meaningful action. For example, in past years, various games, an IBM PC emulator, an HTTP server, a text recognition system, a ray tracing engine, and a PDF generator were created.
