A new version of the remarkable OpenZFS project, implementing the ZFS file system, has been released. Originally, ZFS was developed by Sun under the name Zettabyte File System (later shortened to just ZFS) and was included in Solaris starting in 2005. After Sun was acquired by Oracle, the Solaris source code was closed. The OpenZFS project was founded as a fork of the last open version of the code from Sun. Starting with OpenZFS 2.0, it merged with the developments from ZFS-on-Linux and currently supports Linux and FreeBSD systems. Ports for Windows, MacOS, Illumos, and NetBSD are also being developed by enthusiasts.
Changes in version 2.3.0:
- Support for expanding RAIDZ arrays with new disks;
- The data deduplication algorithm has been reworked. The new algorithm shows significantly better performance;
- Support for direct disk access bypassing the ARC, which in some cases allows for improved performance, especially with NVMe disks;
- Most console commands have been enhanced to support output in JSON format;
- The maximum length of file and directory names has increased from 255 to 1023 bytes;
- Numerous minor fixes and improvements;
- Supported OS versions: Linux 4.18 — 6.12, FreeBSD 13.3, 14.0-14.2.
Additionally, minor versions 2.1.16 and 2.2.7 with fixes were released in December.
