The release of the Toybox 0.8.12 system utility set has been published, optimized for minimal system resource consumption. Similar to BusyBox, all utilities in the set are available through a single executable file. The project is developed by a former maintainer of BusyBox and is distributed under the 0BSD license. The goal of creating Toybox is to provide manufacturers with the ability to use a minimalist set of standard utilities without disclosing the source code of modified components. Currently, Toybox lags behind BusyBox in capabilities, but already implements 316 basic commands (235 fully and 81 partially) out of 392 planned.
Among the innovations in Toybox 0.8.12:
- In tar, support for the zstd compression algorithm has been added, along with the ability to work with deprecated archive formats.
- In getconf, processing of the NPROCESSORS_CONF and NPROCESSORS_ONLN environment variables has been implemented.
- In netcat, the options "-o" and "-O" have been added.
- In devmem, the options "—no-mmap", "-f FILE", and "—no-sync" have been implemented.
- In test, the options "-ef", "-ot", and "-nt" have been added.
- In dmesg, the option "-W" has been added.
- In mount, support for "LABEL=" has been added.
- In lsusb and lspci, the content of /usr/share/hwdata has been taken into account.
- Bugs have been fixed and implementations of the utilities grep, host, find, chmod, tar, ps, test, file, patch, cp, lsusb, top, blkid, ionice, and microcom have been improved.
- Support for building for riscv32 and riscv64 platforms has been added.
