On January 23, after five months of development, version 4.8.33 of the console file manager was released. Midnight Commander, written in C and distributed under the GNU GPL 3 license.
List of major changes:
- Starting with this release, the source code will utilize features of the C99 standard of the C language, which requires a compiler that supports this standard to build MC.
- The minimum required version of Automake for building has been raised to version 1.14.
- Support for ksh variations as a subshell has been added.
- Improved support for the Fish shell 4.0.
- Support for using an array of values in the PROMPT_COMMAND environment variable (for bash >= 5.1) has been added.
- The value of the ENV environment variable is no longer overwritten when using ash and dash shells as subshells.
- A choice of Vim-style key combinations has been added.
- Support for .torrent files (viewing and VFS) has been added.
- For sound and video playback and image viewing in non-graphical sessions, console utilities are now preferred.
- Support for OpenEmbedded ipk archives and Rust package format Crate has been added in mc.ext.ini.
- Now the choice of web browser occurs at runtime.
- The estimation of the execution time for file copy and move operations has been corrected in the event of file errors.
- Fixed crashes and memory leaks that were detected.
- Other improvements and bug fixes.
