A year after the first attempt to port Firefox to GTK4 made by Martin Stransky, the maintainer of Firefox packages in Fedora and RHEL, an enthusiast has emerged to continue the initiative. The project is now led by Jens Persson, co-author of the Panucci app for playing podcasts and audiobooks. The work on the port is not yet complete, but there has been active development in the project's repository over the past two months focusing on creating a layer with widgets based on GTK4. Currently, the work is concentrated on utilizing Wayland, while X11 support is not yet available.
The project is fully compatible with the official Firefox port based on GTK3 and is developing through the creation of an alternative layer with widgets, developed in parallel with the GTK3 layer and not altering its related components. At this stage, the GTK4 port of Firefox successfully builds and runs, with issues related to window resizing already resolved. Future plans include addressing input handling issues, as well as adding support for clipboard functionality, drag-and-drop mode, file, color, Emoji selection dialogs, and handler applications.
