Zstandard 1.5.7

After 11 months of development and over 500 commits, the release of version 1.5.7 of the fast data compression library and the console utility Zstandard, written in C and distributed under BSD and GNU GPL 2 licenses, has been completed.

This is a significant release with improvements in performance, stability, and functionality, and it is especially recommended for users of 32-bit systems.

Key Changes:

  • A long-standing and very rare compression issue in 32-bit mode has been resolved, which could occur during long sessions (the same ZSTD_CCtx* being reused repeatedly).
  • A substantial increase in compression speed (up to +30%) for small data.
  • Compression speed has improved (~+5%) with a dictionary at low compression levels.
  • The command —patch-from operates faster at high compression levels, with better compression ratios.
  • The compression ratio has been enhanced at all levels due to improved boundary detection for blocks.
  • Detection of the CPU bmi2 instruction at runtime now works in 32-bit x86 mode as well.
  • Multithreading is now enabled by default in the console utility.
  • A new command —max has been added to the console utility, which attempts to provide the best possible compression ratio by maximizing all parameters.
  • A new method ZSTD_compressSequencesAndLiterals() has been added to the API.
  • The function ZSTD_getFrameHeader() now works with skipped frames as well.
  • Other improvements and bug fixes have been made.
