The company Jollaboys, which acquired the assets of Jolla after its bankruptcy, has released the Sailfish OS 5.0. Builds have been prepared for 16 devices, including Jolla C2, Sony Xperia 10, and Sony Xperia XA2. This is the first release of the platform following the restructuring of Jolla's business in 2023, its exit from the influence of Russian investors via bankruptcy, and the cessation of collaboration with the developers of the Aurora OS.
Sailfish uses a graphical stack based on Wayland and Qt5 libraries, with the system environment built on Mer, which has been developing as part of Sailfish since April 2019, along with packages from the Mer distribution Nemo. The user interface, basic mobile applications, Silica QML components for building the graphical interface, a layer for running Android applications, a smart text input engine, and a data synchronization system are proprietary, though their code was planned to be open-sourced as early as 2017.
Key Changes:
- Support has been added for the personal AI assistant Jolla Mind2 and the Jolla C2 smartphone (based on the Turkish smartphone Reeder S19 Max Pro S).
- Support added VPN WireGuard.
- A new landscape mode has been implemented.
- A feature for blocking unwanted calls has been added, allowing users to filter incoming calls from specified numbers.
- The Sailfish Browser has been transitioned to the Gecko ESR91 engine, corresponding to Firefox 91 (work is underway to update to Gecko ESR102).
- The compatibility layer with Android has been updated to the Android 13 platform.
- Included is the microG 0.3.6 package, offering independent alternatives to Google services.
