The release of DXVK 2.6, an implementation of Direct3D 8/9/10/11 on top of the Vulkan API

The release of DXVK 2.6 is now available, providing an implementation of DXGI (DirectX Graphics Infrastructure), Direct3D 8, 9, 10, and 11, functioning through a call translation to the Vulkan API. To use DXVK, you need drivers supporting API Vulkan 1.3, such as Mesa RADV 24.0, NVIDIA 535.183.01, Intel ANV 24.0, AMDVLK 2024.Q1.3, AMDGPU-PRO, and NVK 24.1. DXVK can be used to run 3D applications and games on Linux using Wine, serving as a higher-performance alternative to the Direct3D implementations built into Wine that operate on top of OpenGL.

Key Changes:

  • Support for the NVIDIA Reflex mechanism has been added, which reduces latency in rendering graphics in games by proactively sending commands to generate a new frame before the current frame is finished rendering. To use Reflex in games based on Direct3D 11, an NVIDIA driver supporting the Vulkan extension VK_NV_low_latency2 and the installation of the experimental branch of the Proton package are required. Among the games where this optimization can be applied are God of War, Overwatch 2, and Quake Champions. Games based on the Unreal Engine 4 are not currently supported.
  • Race conditions that caused crashes in games loading resources in multithreaded mode have been fixed in the D3D8 and D3D9 implementations.
  • The ID3D11On12Device1 interface has been added.
  • The implementation of swapchain virtual framebuffers based on the Vulkan API has been redesigned.
  • A workaround for a typical error in games causing output distortion on systems with NVIDIA drivers using MSAA (Multisample Anti-Aliasing) has been added. The cost is a slight increase in memory consumption and CPU load. This issue was observed in games such as Assassin’s Creed 3 / Black Flag, Watch Dogs, and Stalker: Clear Sky.
  • Optimizations have been made that potentially increase performance in games using the NVAPI UAVOverlap mode, pixel shader UAV, or resource binding. For example, performance improvements are noticeable in games like Baldurs Gate 3, Trine 5, and God of War.
  • Issues manifesting in games have been addressed:
    • Cardfight!! Vanguard Dear Days 2
    • CivCity: Rome
    • Clanfolk
    • Global Operations
    • Kingdom Come: Deliverance
    • Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
    • Silent Hill 2
    • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell
    • Trainz 1.3
    • Watch Dogs 2
