Microsoft is increasing pressure on Windows 10 users, urging them to upgrade to Windows 11 or purchase a new computer compatible with the latest OS version. In addition to pop-up notifications on devices, Microsoft has begun sending emails warning that support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025, and after that date, there will be no more security updates.
In the Microsoft email, it states: "After October 14, 2025, there will be no more free software updates from Windows Update, technical support, or security fixes for Windows 10." At the same time, as The situation regarding the upgrade to Windows 11 is complicated by the fact that a vast number of devices released before 2018 officially do not meet the Windows 11 requirements due to lacking the TPM 2.0 security module. According to the U.S. nonprofit organization (PIRG), by 2025 about 1 billion computers may be left without any support because they remain on Windows 10.
At the same time, Microsoft has urged users either to find a way to upgrade or to purchase a new PC suitable for Windows 11. The email also suggests recycling outdated computers or selling them (presumably for a very low price).
Interestingly, despite the active calls to upgrade, Windows 10 still holds 58% of the global desktop PC market, while Windows 11's share is only 38% according to
Statcounter for February 2025. For those who do not wish to switch to the new system, Microsoft recommends at least backing up files using OneDrive.
