The Latin American Free Software Foundation has released a fully free version of the Linux kernel 6.14 — Linux-libre 6.14-gnu, which has been cleaned of firmware elements and drivers containing non-free components or code segments whose usage is restricted by the manufacturer. In Linux-libre, kernel features for loading external non-free components, not included in the kernel distribution, have also been disabled, and references to the use of non-free components have been removed from the documentation.
To clean the kernel from non-free parts, the Linux-libre project has created a universal shell script that contains thousands of templates to detect the presence of binary inserts and exclude false positives. Pre-made patches created based on the use of the aforementioned script are also available for download. The Linux-libre kernel is recommended for use in distributions that meet the Free Software Foundation's criteria for building fully free GNU/Linux distributions. For example, Linux-libre is used in distributions such as GNU Guix System, Dragora Linux, Trisquel, Dyne:Bolic, gNewSense, Parabola, Musix, and Kongoni.
The Linux-libre 6.14-gnu release proposes code for cleaning blobs in the new drivers hx9023s, amdxdna, and tas2781 spi. The names of blobs in dts files (device tree) for the Aarch64 architecture have been cleaned. The code for removing blobs in Intel avs, amdgpu, r8169, mt7996, and iwlwifi drivers has been updated. The cleanup of the wl128x driver, which has been removed from the kernel, has been discontinued.
