The developers of the openSUSE distribution have implemented the ability to parallelize the download of packages and metadata in the Zypper package manager. Additionally, a new backend has been proposed that more optimally reuses already established connections and improves metadata processing efficiency. When updating 250 packages with a total size of 100 MB, the download time with the new backend and parallel mode enabled was reduced from 68.7 seconds to 13.1 seconds, and when updating 407 packages with a size of 1 GB, it decreased from 281.1 seconds to 119.6 seconds.
Parallelization is available starting from releases libzypp 17.36.4 and zypper 1.14.87, currently only available in the Tumbleweed and Slowroll repositories. By default, these capabilities are still disabled and presented as experimental. To enable parallel downloading and the new backend, you can use the environment variables "ZYPP_PCK_PRELOAD=1" and "ZYPP_CURL2=1", and the configuration of the number of concurrent connections is controlled using the parameter "download.max_concurrent_connections" in the zypp.conf configuration file.
