As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated, work is currently underway to adapt the userspace portion of the popular Windows operating system to a new proprietary hybrid kernel based on the source code of the FreeBSD kernel. Thus, Windows 12 will be the last OS from Microsoft to utilize the morally outdated NT kernel; subsequent releases will feature a new kernel codenamed 'Tomato.'
One of the main reasons for this decision is the increasing issues with supporting the outdated NT kernel, as well as the growing popularity of NIX-like kernels in the mobile device and IoT segments.
It is expected that in addition to traditional system calls typical for BSD, the new kernel will also feature an alternative interface based on COM/WinRPC for interaction with user code. Therefore, instead of simple system calls, developers will be provided with a framework for serializing/deserializing data sent via WinRPC, based on Microsoft IDL Compiler and previous developments of COM technology for ABI unification.
