NVIDIA Releases PhysX 5.6.0 Engine, Open Sources Flow GPU

NVIDIA has released the PhysX 5.6 physics simulation engine and the associated PhysX SDK. A new version of the Flow 2.2.0 fluid simulation library is also available. The project code is distributed under a BSD-3 license and supports platforms Linux, macOS, iOS, Windows ΠΈ Android.

Although the PhysX SDK has been published with source code under a BSD license since 2018, up until now the code was published with one significant exception: the GPU simulation kernel was not included. With the PhysX SDK 5.6 update, NVIDIA has opened up all such code under a BSD license and included it in the SDK. More than 500 ready-to-use CUDA kernels are available, providing features such as rigid body dynamics, fluid simulation, and modeling of object deformations. In addition, Flow GPU is now available with a full implementation of GPU compute shaders for the Flow SDK.

PhysX is one of the most popular physics engines, used to handle physical interactions in almost a thousand games and included in many game engines, including Unreal Engine, Unity3D, AnvilNext, Stingray, Dunia 2, and REDengine. The engine scales across a variety of hardware, from smartphones to powerful workstations with multi-core CPUs and GPUs, and takes advantage of the GPU to accelerate effects processing.

PhysX is used in a variety of applications, including destruction, explosions, realistic character and vehicle movements, billowing smoke, trees bending in the wind, water flowing and flowing around obstacles, fluttering and tearing clothing, collisions, and interactions with hard and soft bodies. In addition to game development, the engine can also be used in areas such as data synthesis for artificial intelligence research and neural network training, creating realistic environments for robot training, and simulating real-world conditions during testing of autonomous vehicles and autopilots.
