The release of the OmniOS Community Edition r151054 distribution, based on the Illumos project developments, continues the advancement of the kernel, network stack, file systems, drivers, libraries, and the core set of OpenSolaris system utilities. OmniOS is notable for providing support for bhyve and KVM hypervisors, the Crossbow virtual network stack, the ZFS file system, and the means to launch lightweight Linux containers. This distribution can be used for building scalable web systems, virtualization, and storage solutions.
In the new release:
- Updated package versions include Python 3.13, Perl 5.40.2, SQLite 3.49.1, wget 2.2.0, gnu-binutils 2.44, gnu-coreutils 9.6, git 2.49.0, OpenSSL 3.5.0, and OpenSSH 10.0.2.
- New packages have been added: 7zip (instead of p7zip), aarch64-build-tools, libmagic, file (to replace the built-in utility), tztest.
- The GCC 14 compiler set has been employed for building user space components.
- The mkfs_pcfs utility now supports disk sectors larger than 512 bytes.
- The dtc (device tree compiler) has been added.
- The build of OpenSSL 3 in compatibility mode with the OpenSSL 1.1.1 API has been discontinued.
- New functions implemented in libc include fdclose, dprintf, vdprintf, wcslcat, wcslcpy, getlocalename_l, posix_spawn_file_actions_addchdir, posix_spawn_file_actions_addfchdir, and secure_getenv. A new header file stdbit.h and associated functions have been introduced.
- The properties accessible to virtual network adapters used in isolated environments (Solaris Zones) have been expanded.
- Support for AMD CPU performance counters has been added to Bhyve, enhancing the CPUID provision to guest systems, and experimental support for virtual TPMs (swtpm) has been implemented. The UEFI firmware has been updated to the EDK-II 202411 package.
- Support for power consumption states (C-State) of AMD processors has been improved. Support for AMD Strix Halo and Krackan processors has been added.
- The GRUB bootloader, OpenSSL 1.x, and Python 2 have been classified as deprecated.
