An update for the Linux distribution "Alt Workstation K 11.0" is available, offering a KDE desktop environment and geared for office and home use. The build is prepared for the x86_64 architecture and is based on the ALT 11 platform. An installation ISO image (8 GB) and a separate Live build (5 GB) have been prepared for download.
The downloaded version can only be used freely by individuals, including individual entrepreneurs. Commercial and government organizations can download and test the distribution, but for permanent use in corporate infrastructure, legal entities must purchase licenses or enter into written licensing agreements.
Key Changes:
- The user environment has been updated to KDE 6 using Wayland by default for Intel and AMD GPUs (X11 is retained for NVIDIA GPUs). It includes KDE Plasma 6.3, KDE Frameworks 6.12, KDE Gear 24.12, Mesa 24.3, NVIDIA drivers 470, FFmpeg 7.1, Qmmp 2.1, and Chromium 134.0 (Yandex Browser is available as an option).
- Transition to multimedia has been implemented. server PipeWire.
- Updated versions of Linux kernel 6.12, Glibc 2.38, GCC 14, systemd 255.18, Java 21, Bash 5.0, Bacula 15.
- The installation image has been redesigned, now allowing the system to run in Live mode. The installer layout has been modified, now translated to Qt6. The screen for selecting additional software in the installer is now shown before disk partitioning.
- The initial boot subsystem has been replaced with altboot.
- Support for the LUKS2 disk encryption format has been added.
- User IDs (UID) now start from 1000 (was 500), as in most other distributions.
- The GameMode performance optimizer has been added, which dynamically changes various Linux system settings.
- Support for the admin:/ protocol has been added in kio-admin to provide administrative access to the entire system (e.g., allows modifying system files in the Dolphin file manager).
- Improved support for booting in UEFI Secure Boot mode, allowing "Alt Workstation K" and Windows to be installed on the same computer.
- In the Discover app center, the latest changes for each package are now shown during system updates.
- A widget for adjusting the brightness of built-in and external monitors has been added to the taskbar.
- Added and integrated with NetworkManager VPN-client OpenFortiVPN with tunnel support over TLS.
- The "Surguč" program for working with digital signatures in PDF documents has been added.
- The "Kopidel" program for creating an ISO image with a copy of an already configured system has been added.
The release of the "Alt Workstation" distribution 11.0 can also be noted, available in x86_64 and AArch64 builds. Among the specific changes for this build, the transition from MATE to GNOME 47.4 with Wayland as the default can be highlighted. Two interface modes are offered: panel mode for users accustomed to the classic MATE design, and GNOME mode, which is the standard for new GNOME versions. A service alt-panelmoded has been added to switch between modes while preserving user profiles. The mode can be selected in the interface during the first launch of ALT Tour.
