The codebase for the upcoming release of GNOME 49, scheduled for September, has integrated the Mutter SDK (Mutter Development Kit), which implements a new method of interaction with the Mutter compositing manager and the GNOME Shell. The Mutter SDK allows for launching a nested instance of GNOME Shell within a GTK application to streamline the testing of Mutter and GNOME Shell during development.
Nested instances of Mutter and GNOME Shell output information to a virtual monitor, which is tied to the current user session, displayed in the application window, and supports touchscreen event emulation. Connecting a virtual monitor without creating a new session is accomplished using an API for screen recording and remote desktop interaction. An option ‘—sdk’ has been added to launch separate instances in Mutter and GNOME Shell. The D-Bus API org.gnome.Mutter.Sdk can be used for management.
