Mozilla has announced the discontinuation of the Pocket service. As of today, the Pocket app and browser extension have been removed from the directories, and new account registrations have been halted. The service will cease operations on July 8, with unused funds refunded to paid subscribers, and Pocket Web will be transitioned to export-only mode. On October 8, the ability to export data from Pocket will be terminated, and all accounts and associated data will be deleted.
Pocket has been integrated into Firefox since version 38.0.5 (2015) and allowed users to save pages to revisit later when they had time. In 2017, Mozilla acquired Read It Later, the company behind Pocket, gaining control over the project.
The reason given for the closure of Pocket is that the service no longer aligns with users' preferred online workflows, and there is a desire to redirect its resources to other projects that better reflect user needs and habits online. It is noted that the new tab grouping feature and enhanced bookmarking system in Firefox now provide built-in functionality for managing reading lists.
In addition to Pocket, the distribution of the Fakespot browser extension, which uses a machine learning system to identify fake reviews, inflated ratings, fraudulent sellers, and deceptive discounts on marketplace sites, will also be discontinued. The project's website, mobile apps, and browser extensions will cease to exist on July 1, 2025. The Review Checker feature in Firefox, based on Fakespot, will be disabled on June 10. The Fakespot extension was created by the company of the same name, which was acquired by Mozilla in 2023.
