The release of VeraCrypt 1.26.24 has been published, which develops a fork of the TrueCrypt disk encryption system that has ceased to exist. VeraCrypt is notable for replacing the RIPEMD-160 algorithm used in TrueCrypt with SHA-512 and SHA-256, increasing the number of hashing iterations, simplifying the build process for Linux and macOS, and addressing issues identified during the TrueCrypt source code audit. The code developed by VeraCrypt is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, while borrowing from TrueCrypt continues to be delivered under the TrueCrypt License 3.0. Ready builds are available for Linux, FreeBSD, Windows, and macOS.
Among the changes in the new version:
- The ability to distribute in AppImage package format has been added.
- Installation scripts for Linux have been improved.
- Support has been added for using /run/media/veracrypt as the default mount point if the /media directory is absent from the system.
- The pcsclite layer has been excluded from the dependencies for rpm and deb packages, which is now checked and loaded dynamically.
- Documentation in CHM format has been added in Russian and Chinese.
- The menu item 'Dismount All' has been renamed to 'Unmount All'. A shortcut ALT+u for unmounting has been added.
- The Whirlpool hash function has been enabled on big-endian byte order systems.
- A screenshot and screencast protection has been implemented and enabled by default for the Windows platform (can be disabled in Performance/Driver Configuration settings or in the MSI installer).
