The release of the Live distribution NST 42 (Network Security Toolkit) is presented, designed for network security analysis and monitoring its functioning. The size of the bootable ISO image (x86_64) is 5 GB. A special repository has been prepared for Fedora Linux users, allowing the installation of all developments created within the NST project on an already installed system. The distribution is built on the Fedora base and allows the installation of additional packages from external repositories compatible with Fedora Linux.
The distribution includes a comprehensive collection of applications related to network security (for example: Wireshark, NTop, Nessus, Snort, NMap, Kismet, TcpTrack, Etherape, nsttracroute, Ettercap, etc.). A special web interface has been prepared to manage the security auditing process and automate the invocation of various utilities, which also integrates a web frontend for the Wireshark network analyzer. The graphical environment of the distribution is based on FluxBox.
In the new release:
- The package base is synchronized with Fedora 42. The Linux 6.14 kernel is used. Security and network manipulation applications have been updated to new versions.
- DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) tools based on the ntop package are integrated into the package inspection interface. The RGraph library is used for generating graphs.
- The ntopng package has been redesigned to run in a Docker container.
- A page has been added to the web interface for testing network performance using LibreSpeed.
- The ability to run a container with the Node-RED visual development environment has been added.
- A new menu 'Environmental Science' has been proposed with applications for weather analysis and seismology.
