Caroline Stage, the Minister for Digitalization in the Danish government, has confirmed the agreement between the government and regional authorities on the digital sovereignty strategy. As part of the initial implementation of this new strategy, the Danish Ministry of Digitalization will cease using Microsoft products in favor of open-source software. LibreOffice will be used as the office suite. Half of the employees will transition to LibreOffice within the next month. The plan is to complete the transition of all employees to open-source software by the end of the year.
The decision to stop using Microsoft as the primary IT service provider has also been made by the municipal authorities of Copenhagen and Aarhus. Reasons for the transition include financial considerations, dependence on a company that holds almost a monopoly in the market, and the deteriorating geopolitical climate due to statements by the US President expressing a desire to gain control over Greenland. Financial aspects are tied to the fact that spending on Microsoft software has increased by 72% over five years — from 313 million kroner in 2018 to 538 million kroner in 2023.
