Nate Graham, a developer involved in quality control for the KDE project, has published another development report for KDE. The report mentions the KDE project’s development of a new on-screen keyboard, plasma-keyboard, which is being designed as a replacement for the Maliit virtual keyboard currently used on mobile devices and touch-screen systems.
Plasma-keyboard is based on the code of the Qt on-screen keyboard, the Qt Virtual Keyboard, enhanced with features for integration with the Plasma desktop and addressing some usability issues. Recent changes include the implementation of a custom keyboard styling called 'Breeze', which resembles the design of the Maliit keyboard, and the introduction of a new scaling algorithm that improves the keyboard's display on narrow screens.
Among recent changes in the codebase shaping the upcoming release of KDE Plasma 6.5:
- In the folder content preview window on the desktop, a placeholder showing information about the absence of items now appears for empty folders (previously, a completely empty window created the impression of a rendering failure in the interface).
- When creating a screen recording of a separate window, the recording now captures pop-up windows created by that window.
- In the Bluetooth setup wizard, unnamed devices are now hidden by default.
- When muting the system sound, silent mode is now disabled for all devices whenever the volume changes (previously, silent mode was only disabled for the active device but remained enabled for additional sound devices).
- The KDE Plasma widget template has been updated to align with the style and technologies of Plasma 6.
- In the KDE Frameworks 6.16 branch, in the file open and save dialog, files sorted by date now display the newest files at the top of the list rather than at the bottom. Crashes occurring in applications based on the Kirigami framework, such as System Settings and Discover, have been resolved. The first issue occurred during mouse wheel scrolling when animations were disabled in the settings, and the second occurred during the use of software rendering.
